Uh-Oh! Mega-Big Development Coming to the Moriches Bay Area -- Again?

Mega-developer Wilbur Breslin is once again proposing a very large project at the western gateway to Center Moriches. Breslin wants to develop 36 acres of wooded property located on the north and south sides of Montauk Highway between James Hawkins Rd. and Waldbaums (at the western end of Frowein Rd. Residents neighboring the properties recently received letters from Breslins companies, Moriches Development, LLC and South Moriches, LLC that detailed proposed zoning changes from A-1 residential to J-2 business on the north side of Montauk Highway.  Such a zoning change would allow businesses including laundromats, pharmacies, take-out restaurants, and big-boxretail. There is also a proposed change of zone on the south side of the highway from A-1 to planned retirement community along with additional retail space. This sort of massive development is clearly not in character with small town nature of the Moriches Bay area. The downtown areas of Moriches, Center Moriches, East Moriches, and Eastport have small businesses that contribute to a positive quality of life.

Make no mistake! the proposed development poses serious threats to the economic viability of these business districts.  And, the proposed development sits at the headwaters of Orchard Neck Creek and would have serious negative consequences on this waterway and the Bay. Do we really need such development to further degrade the quality of our local waters?

Community organizations, residents, and elected officials came together and defeated past proposals in 2003 and 2011.  But local residents need to be proactive to protect their quality of life, and so everyone who cares about the future of the Moriches area is encouraged to attend this important meeting to discuss their concerns.

Other development projects for discussion:

Echo Pond - Condo/apartments, Wading River Road/Sunrise Hwy. South service road

12 acres / 9 buildings containing 50 condo units

No traffic study conducted / School impact? / Emergency services impact?

Planned Retirement Community (PRC)- next to Spadaro airport in East Moriches

Damianos  - proposed medical professional offices on Montauk Hwy. Center Moriches
